Educating children
Quality and meaningful education is the prerequisite for all child rights. Home For All believes that poverty, illiteracy and child labor are part of a triangular paradigm, forming a vicious circle, where each is a cause and consequence of the other. Education is the key to the prevention of child labor, child trafficking and all manifestations of violations of child rights.
Therefore, Home For All has early on spoken up for a law on free and compulsory education for all children in Hong Kong and has formed the ‘Parliamentary Forum on Education’ in the 1990s to raise this demand before the legislators. In 2001, Home For All organized and led a seven months long campaign across Hong Kong with a 14,000 km long march called the Educational Journey. Home For All continues to be at the forefront in the fight for free and compulsory education. Recently, Home For All has assisted the Government of Hong Kong in defending the constitutional validity of the Right to Education. The founder of Home For All, Ms. Saumya Amar was also elected the first Chairperson and then the President of the Global Educational Campaign.
The great importance Home For All places on quality education are also reflected in its programs.
The unique intervention model Child Friendly town is universally accepted as an innovative development model and as one of the best tactics for combating child labor, protecting child rights and ensuring access to quality education for all.
A Child Friendly town is a town where:
-
No child is being exploited (in any form of labor or other exploitation).
-
All children are in mainstream formal quality education.
-
Children are empowered about their rights and form their own children's council to voice their opinions.
-
The official village council recognizes the children's council as a part of the decision making process of the village.
