Coco Chanel (1888-1971)

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, one of the most famous fashion designer of 1930s was born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France. She worked until her death on January 10, 1971 at the age of 88 and lived in the style she created.

Biography

Educational Background

She was born to an unwed laundry woman named Eugénie Devolle who worked at a charity hospital in Saumur. Her father was a nomadic street vendor who travelled to different towns. Chanel's father and mother married a year later of Chanel's birth. At the age of twelve, her mother died due to bronchitis and her father sent all his daughters to orphanage. She was sent to Boarding girls' house in Moulins at the age of eighteen. From then, she modified her life story and developed fictional stories about her family. In 1971, she died in Hotel Ritz where she resided for more than thirty years.

Chanel learnt sewing when she was in orphanage. In 1910, she opened a shop and began selling hats and by the 1920s, her fashion business expanded which included a couture house, her own textile factory and a line of perfumes. One of the famous perfumes is No. 5. She did not have any proper education but as we say some people learn and excel, and others are inborn talents, she was one of those people.
