Step 1- Identify The Need

I chose perfume as my product which is for females aged between 15-18 years.

Step 2- Research

Mostly female perfumes have some common characteristics like they all are in pink or red shade (girly colors). Their packages are in neon or bright color with fancy letters to attract the audience. Their packaging box is generally in simple shape but the bottle inside is of different shapes and designs. The packaging should also focus on the likes and dislikes of the target audience which highly influence the choice of audience.

Some of the factors which highly impact the audience are:

  • Movies and Songs

  • Celebrities

  • Top Brands

  • Accessories

  • Social Networking Sites

  • Friends and Love

Step 3- Possible Solutions

The three designs that I made for my Perfume Package are:

Design 1

This design mainly focus on colors and graphics with pink, black

and white colors. It would appeal the audience because of its contrast

of bright pink and black with lots of different text styles and graphics.

Design 2

This design has all the elements that any teenage girl would like.

It has symbols of social networking sites, stars, hearts and different

colors. The brand name starts with ‘S’ and here ‘S’ symbolizes stars

with rainbow. The color scheme of this is also multi color with all

the graphics on black background.

Design 3

This design describes what the target audience likes. They like

shopping, flowers, bright colors and they love living and enjoying

their lives. The color scheme for this design is mainly bright and

happy colors like red, yellow, blue and neon colors.

Step 4- Select The Best Solution

I think this was the best design from the three because the color

scheme used in this design would attract the audience most and

teenagers usually like different text styles and graphics of heart

and stars. The shape of the packaging box also goes with the

design and making design on the inner part of the package will

make it even more appealing when the box is open. By looking

at all these reasons, I chose to make this design for my

Perfume Package.

Step 5- Build a Prototype

Step 6- Test and Evaluate

Step 7- Communicate the Solutions

Being a teenage girl myself, I wanted to design something that I would personally like. Although preferences of all the teenagers vary, but most of them have some likes in common-specially the color pink. So, I chose to put my base color as pink. All the graphics used on the packaging appeals the teenagers. I used black and white for the graphics as it contrasts with the base color. Although I used a lot of fonts, they are all fancy text styles which justified the brand name. The stars on the package represented night. I chose the brand name as ‘Pink Night’ because that is a fantasy word and girls usually like fantasy words.

Step 8- Redesign

After making this design in Illustrator, I was pretty impressed by my hard work. It turned out really well. Only thing I would like to add in this is also design on the inner side of the package. I tried doing it but unfortunately I could not succeed in doing that. If it all I had more time and skills in Illustrator, I could have done it. For the next time, I would definitely learn more techniques in illustrator and design it.

Reflection

In this we had to choose a product and design a package for it. I chose female perfume as my product. I chose this project for my portfolio because I think it is one of my best work which shows my illustrator skills. When I was designing the package, I used illustrator for the first time. It took me quite a while to figure out the software and it was very frustrating too as this software is really touch sensitive. After becoming comfortable on illustrator, I played around with it in my free time and got to know it better. I wish now I could edit it to add more effects which I wanted to add at that time.
