 Identify the Need

We had to make a Egg Container and drop it from 3 feet long. The goal was that the egg inside the conatiner should not break. This packaging is for BESS which will protect the egg from breaking while trasporting or delivering.

Individual Design

Description Paragraph

This is my individual design for BESS Egg Container assignment. I have used many materials. First of all, I used cardboard pieces to make the container. I used it because it is very light and it also holds a lot of weight. Then, I will add sponge on all the four sides and also the base of the container. It will protect the egg and prevent it and is also very light. I will add crumbled newspaper and bubble wrap for soft and cushiony surface. Then, I will surround the egg with cotton balls and then will keep the egg at one place and it won't move inside the box.

I think that this design would work because the egg is surrounded by all the things that will protect it from breaking. So, the container won't fall too quickly when thrown as the lighter it is, the slower it will fall.

This design is pretty good and disposable as all the materials can be re-used if the egg does not break. Even if the egg breaks, it can be recycled. That is why, I think that this design would work.

We had to make an egg container and drop it from three feet, the goal was that the egg remained intact even after the container that it was placed in was dropped from 3 feet height. We used the cardboard box, small pieces of foam bubble wrap, newspaper and bubble wrap.

Cardboard box was used as the outer box in which we layered the foam, bubble wrap, crumpled newspaper, and cotton balls to form a cushion type surface for the egg. We used cardboard box for the outer box because it is light in weight and is also capable of holding heavy weights. The other materials that could also hold the weight were heavy themselves or could not hold the weight that we needed. So we decided to use cardboard. Foams were really light and they created spongy surface around the egg which we stuck on the base of the box. We did this so that the egg does not bump on the cardboard and crack. We also put the bubble wrap on the inner sides of the box because it absorbs some of the force caused caused by an impact to protect items that were in the box. Newspaper is light and recyclable material. When crumpled, it also acts like protective shield. Cotton is also a very light. We added it in our container so that it gives our egg a comfortable surface which prevented the egg from moving easily.

I and my teammate first made our individual sketch, then combined both of our sketches and then decided our final idea. We decided the materials we would be using for our container and then we started making the container, It took almost 1 class to build the box. Next day we started filling the box with materials one by one We cut the foam into pieces and glued it into the base and covered it and the other 3- sides with bubble wrap. Then we glued one piece of crumpled newspaper in the middle of the box so that when we put the cotton layer on the top of the bubble wrap. We did not glue one piece of crumpled newspaper in the middle of the box so that when we put the cotton layer on the top of the newspaper. We have a seat for the egg with the protection from all sides. Then, we placed the egg in that space and covered it with a layer of bubble wrap. To cover the egg we placed some newspaper on the top of the box so that the egg is not visible. The last step is to attach the 4th side of the box to make it closed box.

We tested our containers the next day. Ours worked pretty well and the egg was safe inside even after dropping it from 3 feet. I think that our container worked because it had all the necessary materials which protected the egg from breaking in spite of many materials in the box, the box was not at all heavy. I think  this maintained the balance of internal and external force and the egg did not break.

If I were to re-design this egg-container, I would like to make this box smaller so that the box would be lighter than this time and also I would like to close the lid for better protection. I would also like to attach a parachute with the container so it controls and decreases the speed when falling also it will help the container to land smoothly and prevent it from just banging on the floor.

Reflection

This was the first assignment of TDJ2O and that is why, I chose this for putting in my portfolio. This assignment was actually in pairs. So, we decided up the final design to make and started making it. This was a pretty easy assignment and we did not face any major problem in this. Everything went successfully and our container also succeeded in protecting the egg from breaking. I wish I could do this again so that I could make the container in more interesting shape and also make it visually appealing so that the customer will also find it attractive.
